We have new computers now in every pastor’s office, as well as at our office manager’s primary workstation. They arrived last week. New computers — how exciting!
If we are talking new computers the news can’t be all good. The phrase “new computers” just begs for a negative conjunction as is. Yes, we did get new computers, BUT…
So here is the story. We did get new computers but my Outlook was not working properly so I could not receive email. I called Microsoft Technical Support and explained the problem. The woman who was helping me explained that since my software was preinstalled, it was Dell‘s responsibility to help me and not Microsoft’s. She politely offered to transfer me to the Dell Corporation.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the Microsoft woman just handed the phone to a woman sitting next to her. This woman quite cheerfully thanked me for choosing Dell and asked about the nature of my problem. When I told her, she informed me that she would need to transfer me to someone in Technical Support. I am pretty sure she handed the phone to her brother. He too thanked me for choosing Dell and asked about the nature of my problem. I explained it to him and he responded by telling me that he was a hardware specialist and that he could not help me with my software problem. All he could do was assist me in unloading and reloading the software. I was thinking, “You want me to unload new software from a new computer that should not be having these problems in the first place?”, but I did not say that. I was trying to more or less to be pastoral. Sometimes more — sometimes less.
Anyway, I told him I did not want to unload my software. He offered to transfer me to a software technician. I told him that I thought that would be a good idea. He thanked me again for choosing Dell. I told him that he was welcome. He transferred me. This line was busy.
I had to start all over. I called back. Eventually, I spoke to someone on this continent, albeit someone I am fairly certain got caught in the rain at the First Woodstock. Nevertheless, he helped me with my problem. Now I am happy to say we have new computers.
New things take time to figure out and you meet interesting people along the way.
Joy and Peace, Ed
