One wonders how it is that life gets to be what it is sometimes. The daily living just seems to go on without much notice. One day turns into the next and the week is gone. Four of those almost make a month. Twelve of those and we are into years. Years make a lifetime. Yet lifetimes are made up of moments, precious moments that sometimes we do not even recognize.
Watching and listening to Ron preach last Sunday, I realized what a privilege it is for me to work with people like him, Janet and Steve. They are each skilled at what they do, but they are even better human beings. My moments with them are many and blessed even if they do sometimes blur together in the busyness of the day.
Two weeks ago at Passport youth camp, there were moments that were special. Watching our youth worship and seeing them growing in their relationship with God was special. Seeing how well they got along with each other was quite pleasing. Knowing that they are becoming mature followers of Christ was comforting.
This past weekend at PassportKids! was also full of moments, wonderful moments. The excitement of going to camp was evident in the eyes of our children as we prepared to leave the church Wednesday morning. That in itself was a great moment.
In the swimming pool, as our children were jumping, splashing and trying to drown their pastor, there were some fun moments. There were even more fun moments when our children joined with some 300 other children on the recreation field for an hour or so of generally whacky games. There were some meaningful moments in worship, Bible Study and church group devotions as well.
The mystery of it all lies with our young people and our children. Which of all these moments will they hold onto and remember? Which of these moments will be moments that make a difference in their lives? I know that God is at work in their lives and that the Holy Spirit is guiding and shaping them. Yet, the particulars are unique to each one of them, taking shape in that sacred space that exists between each one of them and God.
Just whole bunches of moments, yet somewhere in that bunch of moments are the moments that point not only our youth and children in new directions, but us as well. These are the moments that make us into the people God is calling us to be.
Our Pastor to Students Search Committee had a moment like that a week ago Saturday. They have invited a young man to come to our church the first weekend in August for us to meet and consider. It may well be a moment, a collective moment, that has a great bearing on how and what God will do in and through us in the days
ahead.
Let us join together in praying for the moments that shape our lives.
Joy and Peace,
Ed
